Hotel network
As the notion of offering high-speed Internet access to guests becomes
increasingly widespread in the hospitality industry, many hotels are left to
ponder which of the several competing access technologies are best for their
guests, and for their bottom line. One of the biggest challenges in the industry
today is that many hotels do not have the wiring infrastructure in place to
support high-speed access solutions.
Built in the old days, many hotels may have close to 100-unit, all-suites
property. Standard CAT 3 wiring was installed in its walls when the hotels were
built, which was sufficient at the time for the hotels' telephone systems.
Today, however, CAT 3 is considered inadequate for high-speed Internet signals.
That left hotel management with a dilemma.
Evaluating Various Technologies
You can evaluate a few different technologies. Your primary interest will be
in
getting something effective installed while minimizing the hassles related to
installation. Cost also factored into your criteria. One option will be rewiring
the building with CAT 5 cabling. You will immediately discard this notion
because of the huge cost typically associated with installing dedicated wiring.
Also the anticipated significant disruption to guest activities will be
unacceptable.
You may have the alternative to run Internet signals over the existing telephone
lines. The system offers some benefits for the hotel but the system?s speed and
reliability are doubtful. It may turn out that when the building was wired there
were too many junctions installed, which created a problem with running the
Internet signals over the phone system.
Comparing Wireless and PLC Technologies

It really came down to a consideration of two different technologies: a
traditional wireless solution that relies on radio waves to relay Internet
signals throughout the hotel or a powerline communications (PLC). PLC systems
use existing electrical wiring, present in almost all buildings regardless of
type, to carry high-speed data communications signals. Essentially, this
technology turns ordinary electrical receptacles into network access ports. A
special device called a ?gateway? helps distribute the Internet signal through
the building?s electrical wiring, eliminating the need for installing dedicated
CAT 5 wiring. Portable PLC modems that connect to desktop or laptop computers
feature an ordinary electrical plug on one end. The user gains instant Internet
access by simply plugging the special modem into any electrical outlet in the
room and then plugging the modem?s Ethernet connection into their laptop. Both
the wireless system and the PLC system may show lights since they will avoid
hassles of installing wiring and offered mobility for guests using laptops in
their suites.
The test of a wireless system will show that it may work very well in the front
of the building. But because of the building?s density, the signals may not
reach the back rooms at all. The property, like many tels, is constructed of
brick and cast in place (CIP) concrete, which has a tendency to interfere with
wireless signals.
The PLC system would face no such hurdles. The system transmits Internet signals
over electrical wiring inside large commercial structures ? such as hotels and
other multiunit buildings ? without any signal distortion or interference.

Invisible Installation
Managers and administrators want to offer their guests all the essential amenities, such
as high-speed Internet access, Internet phone services but they do not want to
disrupt or inconvenience their guests during the installation process. One of
the reasons that RadiantOne offers powerline system is because they can offer
high-speed Internet access without the guests ever having to endure
the inconveniences normally incurred during installation.
We can come in and upgrade a building with an extremely high-speed, very
efficient service without disrupting the property. We don?t leave a mess and
don?t drill holes in the walls; we don?t make any noise; and best of all, we
never have to go into the guestrooms. The result is a new service that
arrives at your building without the associated mess or construction issues that
are typical with other upgrades, which is really unique. We assure that
the installation of powerline system would be invisible to the guests and would
be completed
within a matter of days.
A Simple Installation Complete within Days
With powerline system, broadband Internet access is delivered by utilizing a
building?s existing, standard electrical wiring using powerline communications
technology. The system converts virtually every power outlet in every room into
a high-speed data network. It delivers the networking signal in a building by
installing a combination of Gateways, repeaters, and adaptors.
For the first step of the installation process, our electrician will cramp the
core couplers form the gateway to the power distribution panels and connect the
gateway to the T1 line. The gateway distribute the powerline communications
(PLC) signal from the Gateway into the electrical circuit breaker of the
building. This is the only part of the installation that requires an
electrician. Once the gateway is installed, the PLC backbone is completed, and
all the power outlets connected to the power panels are now Internet-ready.
The next step is to distribute the powerline adaptors to the guests that require
high-speed connection to the Internet for instant access. To gain Internet
access, the guests simply plug the powerline adaptors into an electrical
outlet, connected the computer to the Ethernet port on the adaptor, and turned
on the computer. The powerline system worked flawlessly, giving them high-speed
Internet access.
Flexible and scalable All guestrooms and anywhere in the building are connected
with broadband internet access and voice telephony via existing electrical
wiring. Within each room a Powerline is ready to provide connectivity to
computers. The Powerline network is centrally connected to our indoor master
gateway located at the main electrical junction of the school. The network can
be managed from the office and remotely. The management just hands over the
powerline adaptor and IP phone adaptor to the guest. The guest can now access to
the data and voice network in the room or even in the coffee shop within the
building. You now have a fully wired and internet ready hotel for your guests
to access to data and voice at the same network and at reduced cost.
